چکیده

The aim of this study was to determine the functional relevance of high pitch in Tashlhiyt Tamazight (Berber) echo questions and contrastive statements in both production and perception. Production data revealed that compared to statements: (a) questions have a higher pitch register, manifested as an overall higher pitch level and a wider pitch span, (b) questions are more often realized with a pitch peak on the final syllable, and that (c) this pitch peak in questions tends to be realised later in the syllable. Despite these tendencies, pitch peak placement involved considerable variability, both within and across speakers. A subsequent perception study, designed to test to what extent these prosodic cues to sentence modality are used in perception, found that (a) pitch register and (b) the placement of peak on a particular syllable both affect listeners' judgments. The more subtle alignment of the peak within the syllable, (c), was not reliable as a cue. & 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Word stress in Tashlhiyt - Post lexical prominence in disguise?

This paper reports on a study of lexical and postlexical prominence asymmetries in Tashlhiyt Tamazight (Berber), a language that is renowned for its typologically rare prosodic structures. Carrier phrases were designed to elicit the presence or absence of a postlexical tone on the target word. Contrary to previous reports on the language, measures of acoustic durations and intensity reveal no c...

Syllable Structure as Coupled Oscillator Modes: Evidence from Georgian vs. Tashlhiyt Berber

A theory is presented that claims the basis for syllable structure is to be found in the modes of a system of coupled oscillators that control intergestural timing in speech. Onsets correspond to the in-phase mode and codas to the anti-phase mode. Articulatory data from Georgian and Tashlhiyt Berber are presented that support the association of onsets with in-phase mode.

Differential Difficulties in Perception of Tashlhiyt Berber Consonant Quantity Contrasts by Native Tashlhiyt Listeners vs. Berber-Naïve French Listeners

In a discrimination experiment on several Tashlhiyt Berber singleton-geminate contrasts, we find that French listeners encounter substantial difficulty compared to native speakers. Native listeners of Tashlhiyt perform near ceiling level on all contrasts. French listeners perform better on final contrasts such as fit-fitt than initial contrasts such as bi-bbi or sir-ssir. That is, French listen...

Kinematics of Syllable Structure in Tashlhiyt Berber: The Case of Vocalic and Consonantal Nuclei

This study provides evidence from the coordination of articulatory gestures, using electromagnetic articulography (EMMA), in favour of a heterosyllabic analysis of word initial clusters in Tashlhiyt. Evidence from calculations of C-center and Rightmost C to a following anchor in the syllable as well as the stability index consistently supports the predominant analysis amongst phonologists of Ta...
